  2. Here is a list of the main programs and files on the Victor Charlie 
  3. distribution diskette.
  4.  
  5. Please remember that it is impossible to provide sizes, dates and other
  6. particulars on the programs. Victor Charlie is manufactured in extremely
  7. small lots, each of which has different characteristics. This provides
  8. special security against viruses written to seek out Victor Charlie on
  9. your computer. Sizes and dates of the first group of programs below may 
  10. vary from one shareware edition to the next.
  11.  
  12. VC          This file, during initialization of Victor Charlie, becomes
  13.             VC.EXE. It is vital to the operation for the VC5 menu
  14.             interface, VC.BIN.
  15.  
  16. VC.BIN      This is the actual menu program. Although it is an executable
  17.             program by the definitions of DOS, it only can be run by
  18.             using the VC command.
  19.  
  20. VC1         The dominant front-line VC5 program. After it is made to an
  21.             executable program (VC1.COM) and initialized, it is
  22.             responsible for checking the DOS system for Type 2 virus
  23.             infection. It also "baits" Type 1 viruses.
  24.  
  25. VC2         VC2, during initialization of your anti-virus program, 
  26.             becomes VC2.EXE. Its primary role is to bait such 
  27.             .EXE-infecting Type 1 viruses into attacking it.
  28.  
  29. VCHECK      A powerful scanning program. Includes built-in logic to 
  30.             detect virus codes with artificial intelligence and other 
  31.             means. Produces lists of Bitchecks(tm) which serve to detect 
  32.             future virus infections from any source.
  33.  
  34. VCHECK.CFG  A sample file illustrating how to control the files to be 
  35.             searched for virus signatures and Bitchecks by VC's 
  36.             VCHECK.COM.
  37.  
  38. VCOMP       VC5's most specialty program. It compares any two lists of
  39.             Bitchecks made by VCHECK, and reports differences. Such
  40.             differences may signal viral infection.
  41.  
  42. VC5.BAT     Runs a fast anti-virus check any time after installation 
  43.             from the DOS command line.
  44.  
  45. VC.HLP      The help file for the main VC5 programs, excluding the menu
  46.             interface. This ASCII file can be rewritten to provide
  47.             context-sensitive help in any environment and in any foreign
  48.             language.
  49.  
  50. VIR.HLP     The specialty help file for the VC5 menu shell.
  51.  
  52. VC.SIG      A sample virus Signature Library file. As provided, this 
  53.             library allows VCHECK to scan for common latent viruses. VC5 
  54.             programs will update this file with signatures secured via 
  55.             Real Time Signature Capture (RTSC) during virus attack.
  56.  
  57. (NOTE: The three .COM files following are virus-resistant but not virus-
  58. proof. Bootfix and Ptresq, for safety's sake, will run only one time
  59. from a hard disk, to prevent becoming a virus carrier.)
  60.  
  61. BOOTFIX     When copied to executable form (BOOTFIX.COM), "sterilizes"
  62.             data and backup floppy diskettes to prevent the spread of
  63.             viruses carried in the boot sectors of such disks. Program
  64.             is self-documenting when run.
  65.  
  66. PTRESQ      A generic cure for viruses in the hard drive partition 
  67.             table. When copied to executable form (PTRESQ.COM), allows 
  68.             the user to view a Master Boot Record (partition sector), 
  69.             write a new MBR, or restore the old MBR in case of failure.
  70.  
  71. GET         Interactive batch-file enhancer and more. Copy to GET.COM and
  72.             type "GET" for help.
  73.  
  74. And the following utilities:
  75.  
  76. VSEARCH.BAT Builds and compares Bitcheck(tm) lists for use in detecting
  77.             changes to virus-vulnerable files on any disk. Automates the 
  78.             process monitoring changes to program files.
  79.  
  80. VBAIT.BAT   A method of guarding data against virus bomb attacks. Uses 
  81.             Bitchecking(tm) to keep track of data "bait" files.
  82.  
  83. ALTV.BAT    Uses ANSI.SYS to, effectively, put VC5.BAT on a hot key 
  84.             (Alt-V), to give routine anti-virus checks at a keystroke.
  85.  
  86. NOFALSE.BAT The built-in "intelligence" in VCHECK may cause false alarms
  87.             on some systems some of the time. This program makes a new
  88.             Victor Charlie program set with logic turned OFF.
  89.  
  90. WI.BAT      An extra-program demo of Victor Charlie's VCHECK, used as a
  91.             fast "whereis" utility. Searches all available hard drives
  92.             for one or multiple files. Wildcards fine. Type "WI" for
  93.             reminder-help.
  94.  
  95. VINSTALL.BAT Used only during the installation process of Victor Charlie 
  96.              Ver 5. Should be automatically deleted at the end of the
  97.              installation, and exist only in the distribution archive.                  
  98.  
  99. VCSTART.BAT  A batch file to ensure regeneration of any Victor Charlie 
  100.              programs which have "suicided" because of virus infection. 
  101.              Also runs a quick, one-time check of the computer system. 
  102.              Designed to be CALLed from Autoexec.BAT every time the 
  103.              computer runs, and will be installated in Autoexec.BAT 
  104.              during installation if the user wishes.
  105.  
  106. RESCDISK.BAT This batch file is used by VC (or at the command line) to 
  107.              help in the making or a reliable "rescue diskette".
  108.  
  109. VC.DOC       The main documentation for VC. This document is formatted 
  110.              for easy printing by most printers, including laser-jets.
  111.              This 75-page document contains ALL relevant information you 
  112.              need to run Victor Charlie, including how to customize the 
  113.              program. Illustrations (screen dumps) have been omitted, 
  114.              purely for technical reasons.
  115. TECHREF.DOC  A summary of all available commands, command-line 
  116.              parameters and other technical information about all VC 
  117.              programs. Note this is a "technical" document, tailored for 
  118.              use mostly by advanced users familiar with DOS.
  119. FILE_ID.DIZ  PCBoard BBS-compatible description of VC for BBS sysops
  120. DESC.SDI     60-character, one-line descriptive file of VC for BBS sysops 
  121. PACKING.LST  This document, listing all files in the VC shareware
  122.              distribution set (archive or diskette) 
  123. AGENTS.DOC   A list of persons/companies authorized to distribute both 
  124.              shareware and registered versions of Victor Charlie and 
  125.              other BSA products.
  126. POLICY.DOC   Bangkok Security Associates' policy for its software, 
  127.              licenses, and customers. (These policies meet or surpass 
  128.              recommendations by the Association of Shareware 
  129.              Professionals, or ASP.
  130. ORDER.DOC    An easy form which you can use to order a registered 
  131.              version of Victor Charlie.
